2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 is tedious to write. So we write 2⁵ — "five 2's multiplied together." But what happens when you multiply 2³ × 2⁴? Do you get 2⁷ or 2¹² or something else? There are rules — and they all come from the definition.
