Rational Expressions

You know that 6/8 simplifies to 3/4 by canceling the common factor 2. The same idea works with polynomials: (x² − 1)/(x + 1) simplifies to (x − 1) because x² − 1 = (x+1)(x−1), and the (x+1) cancels.
