Completing the Square

Take x² + 6x. Imagine it as a square of area x² plus a rectangle of area 6x. You can rearrange the rectangle into an L-shape around the square — but there's a missing corner. That corner is (6/2)² = 9. Add it to "complete the square," and you get (x + 3)².
