The First Derivative Test

A critical point just says 'slope is zero here.' Is it a peak, a valley, or a flat terrace? Look at the slope on either side. If f' flips from + to −, you were climbing then descending — a peak. From − to +, a valley. No flip? Just a pause on a slope. The sign change of f' is the verdict.
