You already know rates of change — it's just slope. Rise over run. The only trouble: slope works for straight lines, where the steepness is constant. But a curve bends — its steepness changes at every point. How do you state the slope at ONE exact spot? A derivative is slope made instantaneous: the steepness of a curve at a single point.
