The great electron handoff

Some atoms are desperate to get rid of an electron, and others are desperate to grab one. Put them together and the deal closes instantly: one gives, one takes.

That transfer leaves both atoms charged — and opposite charges pull together hard. That pull is an ionic bond.

Ionic bond = a metal gives electron(s) to a nonmetal, and the resulting + and − ions attract.
