'Sodium chloride.' 'Carbon dioxide.' These names sound technical, but they're actually descriptions — each one tells you which elements are inside and roughly how many.

Chemists agreed on naming rules so a name is never ambiguous. And the rules split along the same line as bonds: ionic compounds and covalent compounds get named differently.
