Chemical Reactions

Strike a match and the wood is gone — replaced by ash, smoke, and heat. Leave a nail in the rain and shiny iron turns to crumbly orange rust. In both cases the starting material vanished and something new took its place.

That's a chemical reaction: matter rearranges into new substances. The things you start with are reactants; the things you end with are products.
