Press on a sealed syringe and the gas inside resists — pressure climbs as volume shrinks. Warm a balloon and it expands. Gases are springy and responsive in ways solids and liquids aren't.

Remarkably, all this behavior follows simple, predictable laws relating pressure (P), volume (V), and temperature (T).
