Redox Reactions

A shiny nail turns to rust. Bleach lifts a stain to white. A flame consumes wood. They look completely different, but underneath, the very same thing is happening: electrons are jumping from one atom to another.

Reactions where electrons transfer are called redox reactions — short for reduction-oxidation. One atom gives, another takes.
