Electron Shells

You might picture electrons buzzing chaotically around the nucleus. But they're surprisingly organized — they settle into layers, like seats arranged in rings around a campfire. The closest ring fills first, then the next, then the next.

These rings are called electron shells, and each one can only hold so many electrons before it's full.
