Ions

A normal atom is perfectly balanced: it has just as many positive protons as negative electrons, so the charges cancel out to zero. It's electrically neutral.

But electrons are loosely held on the outside, and atoms can lose or grab a few. The instant the proton and electron counts stop matching, the atom carries a leftover charge. Now it's an ion.
