The Characteristic Equation (real roots)

You now know the trick: ay″ + by′ + cy = 0 becomes ar² + br + c = 0. When that quadratic has two different real roots, you're essentially done. Each root r gives an exponential mode e^{rx}, and the general solution is just their weighted sum. The hardest step is factoring a quadratic you learned in high school.
