Forget the explicit solution for a moment. Plot the system's state as a single point and let it move — its path traces a trajectory in the phase plane. Sweep over all starting points and you get a phase portrait: a picture of every possible future at once. Astonishingly, the eigenvalues of A alone decide which picture you get.
