An autonomous equation has the form y′ = f(y): the rate depends only on the current value y, never explicitly on time. That makes them perfect for spotting EQUILIBRIA — values where f(y) = 0, so the rate is zero and the system rests. A population at carrying capacity, a thermostat at setpoint: change stops there.
