Pure decay races to zero, but a cup of coffee never freezes solid on the counter — it settles at room temperature and stops. The fix is small but crucial: an object loses heat in proportion to how far ABOVE the surroundings it is. Close that gap and the cooling slows, fading to a halt at room temperature.
