Slope Fields

A first-order equation y′ = f(x, y) tells you the slope of the solution at every single point of the plane. So even without solving, you can sketch a tiny line segment at each point with the slope it demands. Step back and those segments form a flowing field — a slope field — and the solution curves are the paths that follow the flow.
