Inclusion–Exclusion

Thirty students take Spanish, twenty take French, but how many take at least one language? You can't just say 50 — anyone taking both was counted once in each group. Add the two and you've double-counted the overlap. Inclusion–exclusion fixes this with one elegant move: add the parts, then subtract what you counted twice.
