Permutations

Three runners cross the finish line. Gold-Silver-Bronze going to Ana-Ben-Cleo is a different result than Cleo-Ben-Ana — the same three people, but the order matters. Counting arrangements like this, where rearranging gives a new outcome, is called a permutation. It's the counting principle with a twist: each pick removes one option from the next.
