Relations

'Is friends with', 'is less than', 'divides evenly' — each of these connects pairs of things. In discrete math we capture such a link precisely as a relation: a set of ordered pairs (a, b) saying 'a is related to b'. A social network's follow list, a less-than comparison, a family tree — all of them are relations, just collections of pairs.
