Pythagorean Applications

You're on one corner of a city block, your friend is on the opposite corner. Walking around the block is 7 blocks north + 4 blocks east. But the straight-line 'as the crow flies' distance is much shorter. How much shorter? That's a Pythagoras question hiding in plain sight.
