Triangles

Push on a square frame and it folds into a rhombus. But push on a triangle — any triangle — and it holds its shape completely. That's why bridges, cranes, and bicycle frames are full of triangles: they're the only rigid polygon. From this unyielding shape comes all of structural engineering.
