Basis & Dimension

To navigate 3D space you need exactly three directions — no more, no less. Two would leave a direction unreachable; four would be redundant and give competing instructions. That 'just right' set — independent enough that nothing is wasted, complete enough that everything is reachable — is a basis. Its size is the dimension, the single number that classifies a vector space. Every coordinate system, every pixel grid, every neural network embedding has a dimension behind it.
