The Dot Product

A solar panel faces a direction. The sun shines from another. How much light it catches depends on how aligned those two directions are — full power when they line up, zero when perpendicular. We need a single number that measures 'how much two vectors point the same way.' That number is the dot product, and it runs lighting in every 3D game and similarity scoring in every search engine.
