Critical Points

Drop a marble anywhere on a smooth landscape and it rolls — unless it's at the very bottom of a valley, the very top of a peak, or balanced on a mountain pass. At those spots the ground is perfectly level in every direction. Find them and you've found every candidate for the highest and lowest points of the whole surface.
