Linearization & Differentials

Zoom far enough into any smooth surface and it looks flat — like how the round Earth feels flat underfoot. That flat patch is the tangent plane, and near the point of contact it's an almost-perfect stand-in for the real surface. Use it and hard values become one-line estimates.
