Spherical Coordinates

A planet, a raindrop, the glow around a point charge — all spherical. Spherical coordinates pin a point with three numbers: ρ, the straight-line distance from the origin; φ, the polar angle measured down from the +z axis (0 at the north pole, π at the south); and θ, the angle around the z-axis, just like longitude.
