Surface Integrals & Flux

Hold a hoop in a stream. How much water passes through it each second? Tilt the hoop face-on to the current and lots flows through; turn it edge-on and almost nothing does. The answer is flux: the total amount of a field crossing a surface, counting only the part of the flow that pierces it. Surface integrals are how we add that up over any surface, flat or curved.
