Higher-Order Partials (and Clairaut's theorem)

A first partial tells you the surface's slope. Take a partial of THAT and you learn how the slope itself is changing — the curvature. With two variables there are now four ways to differentiate twice: with respect to x then x, y then y, x then y, or y then x. And one of the loveliest facts in calculus is waiting in the last two.
