It's 10 o'clock. You add 4 hours — what time is it? Not 14, but 2. The clock wraps at 12, discarding full cycles and keeping only what spills over. This 'keep the remainder' arithmetic runs clocks, calendars, check digits, and the cryptography protecting your bank account. It even has its own name: modular arithmetic.
