Arrange 12 objects into equal rows and you have choices: 3×4, 2×6, 12×1. Now try 7. The only arrangement is 7×1 — it refuses to be reshaped. Some numbers are compos-able from smaller pieces; others stand alone, indivisible. The indivisible ones are the primes, and every number in existence is built out of them.
