In every space movie, explosions roar. In reality, space is silent. A bomb could go off beside an astronaut and they'd hear nothing at all. Why?

Because sound is not a thing that flies through emptiness — it's a disturbance passed from one air molecule to the next, like a whisper down a line. No air, no molecules to pass it along, no sound.
