Absolute Value

You park at mile marker 7 heading north; your friend parks at mile marker −7 heading south. Different spots — but you're both exactly 7 miles from home. GPS doesn't care which way you drove; it reports how far you are. That 'how far, ignoring direction' quantity is absolute value.
