Prime Numbers

Most numbers break apart. 12 = 3 × 4. 15 = 3 × 5. But some numbers refuse — try as you like, they only split as 1 × themselves. These stubborn numbers are the atoms of math: every other number is built by multiplying them together. Finding them was a 2,200-year-old trick, and it starts with a sieve.
