A board is 3 1/2 feet long. You want to cut it into 4 equal shelves. "3 1/2 divided by 4" is awkward to compute when it's written as a mixed number. But if you rewrite 3 1/2 as 7/2, the division becomes clean: 7/2 ÷ 4 = 7/8 ft per shelf. Same quantity, friendlier form.
