Which is the better buy?
Store A sells 2 lbs of apples for $3. Store B sells 5 lbs for $7. Which is cheaper? You can't just compare $3 to $7 — the packages are different sizes. To compare them fairly, you have to reduce both to the price for ONE pound. That number is called a unit rate.
A unit rate has a 1 in the denominator: $1.50 per 1 lb.
