Hand someone a spreadsheet of 365 daily temperatures and they'll glaze over. Plot those same temperatures as a line and they instantly see the seasons. The graph isn't decoration — it's the picture that makes the pattern visible. But pick the wrong picture and you hide the very thing you wanted to show.
