What Fractions Really Mean

You have three cookies and four hungry kids. You can't hand out a whole cookie to each — there aren't enough. But you can't throw the leftovers away either. So what do you do? You cut. Every kid gets part of a cookie, and somehow that has to be written down as a number. That number — the one that names 'a piece of a whole' — is what we're about to meet.
