You press button B3 on a vending machine and a granola bar drops. Every time you press B3, the same bar comes out — the machine never answers the same button two different ways. That reliability is the whole idea behind a function. A function is a machine that takes an input and promises exactly one output for each valid input. No surprises, no ambiguity.
