Expected Value

A lottery ticket costs $2. It pays $1,000,000 — but only 1 time in a million. Is it worth buying? You don't decide with hope; you decide with expected value: the average payout if you played forever. Each outcome's value gets weighted by how often it happens, then summed. It's the single most important number for any bet, insurance policy, or business decision.
