The Normal Distribution

Heights of people. Errors in a measurement. Scores on a big test. Plot enough of them and the same shape keeps appearing: a smooth, symmetric hump — tall in the middle, thin at the edges. It's called the normal distribution, or the bell curve, and once you learn to see it, you'll find it hiding everywhere in nature and data.
