Z-Scores

You scored 88 on a math test where the average was 80 and the spread was small. Your friend scored 92 on a different test where the average was 90 and scores were all over the map. Raw score, your friend wins. But who really did better relative to their class? You can't tell from the numbers alone — unless you measure each score against its own group.
