Same average, different weather

Two cities both have an average temperature of 70°F. One swings from 50 to 90 through the year. The other barely moves, from 68 to 72. Same average — completely different feel. 'Average' tells you nothing about how wild the swings are. You need a way to measure spread.

Averages describe the center. Spread describes the wildness.
