Navigation: Bearings & Vectors

A ship is wrapped in fog. It can see two lighthouses on the chart — their positions known — and it reads the bearing to each one off a compass. From just two angles, the navigator pinpoints the ship's exact location. This ancient trick gave us the age of exploration, and the same idea now lives inside every GPS receiver in every phone.
