Tan as Slope

You already know slope: rise over run, height over width. A line going up-right is steep; a flat line has slope 0; a vertical wall is so steep its slope is undefined. Now draw a line from the center of the unit circle out to the moving point. How steep is that line? It rises by the point's height and runs by the point's width — so its slope is height ÷ width.
