The Mole

When you buy eggs, you say 'a dozen' instead of 'twelve eggs.' A dozen is just a counting word for a fixed amount. Chemists need one too — but atoms are so small that 'a dozen' is uselessly tiny.

So chemists use a much bigger counting word: the mole. One mole is a fixed, gigantic number of particles, the same way a dozen is always 12.
