Tie a ball to a string and whirl it in a circle over your head. Now imagine the string snaps. Which way does the ball fly off — outward, away from your hand? Spiraling? Straight?
It shoots off in a straight line, along the direction it happened to be heading at that instant. The ball never wanted to circle. Something had to keep yanking it inward — and that something was the string.
