The Law of Cosines

From your lookout you measure two landmarks: one is 5 km to the north, the other 7 km to the northeast, with a 60° angle between your sightlines. How far apart are the landmarks? The Pythagorean theorem would settle it instantly — if only the angle were a right angle. It isn't. We need Pythagoras's generalization.
