Polar Coordinates

A treasure map reads '3 miles northeast' — a distance and a direction, not an x-y address. That's a polar coordinate, written (r, θ). Some questions are awkward in Cartesian and effortless in polar: anything with rotation, radiation, or spirals. Two numbers, a different meaning.
